Whispers at Brantwell House
Avery Sinclair, a genealogical consultant in her early 30s, has just moved to the coastal town of Greyhaven Bay to work in the college’s Maritime & Regional History Archives. She purchases Brantwell House—a beautiful but slightly neglected Victorian-Craftsman—cheaply, and immediately senses something unusual: warmth in certain rooms, the faint scent of cedar, and the feeling of being gently observed.
While unpacking, Avery finds a journal fragment hidden in the floorboards, written by someone with the initials “D.M.” At work, a donated box from the Brantwell estate arrives, containing matching journal pages and a photograph of Duncan McKenzie, a 1920s photographer-journalist who died in Greyhaven in 1924. Avery is captivated by his elegant writing and the mysteries he was documenting—strange “convergence points” where the past seems to bleed into the present.
A client, Dorothy Alden, hires Avery to research her great-uncle Thomas Alden, a millworker who fled Greyhaven in 1924 under a cloud of scandal. As Avery investigates, she discovers Thomas’s departure coincided with a deadly mill fire and Duncan’s suspicious death—all within ten days in April 1924.
But her investigation draws unwanted attention. Dr. Harlan, Avery’s supervisor, warns her that powerful descendants of the Carver family are watching. Avery is let go from Greyhaven Bay College Archives and becomes an independent researcher, solving mysteries from long ago.
Despite professional and personal costs, Avery partners with Graham Kincaid, editor of the local newspaper, to publish the truth. The article exposes the mill fire cover-up, clears Thomas Alden’s name, honors the victims, and reveals Duncan’s murder.
Duncan fully manifests for the first time—visible, speaking, present. He and Avery confess their love. But with justice served, will Duncan “move on?” Avery fears losing him.
